Beyond excited for the Sophia & Chloe annual Designer Showcase at the fabulous Montage Beverly Hills! For the Love of Yoga...Inspirations behind our Om and Buddha's Kiss Designs

Sophia & Chloe Large Om Earrings with Citrine

So many reasons why I love yoga...It makes you feel like you got a massage & worked out, all at the same time. I love sharing this with my husband, even if our girls make fun of us. I always leave class smiling. We go to the most fabulous studio, Haute Yoga, where the instructors are amazing and everyone is so nice and welcoming. It reminds me of "Cheers." I am especially charmed & inspired by how my classes include people from ages 12-75+ (I hope to be doing this when I am 75 too), and because I think Namaste is a beautiful word. For all these reasons and many more, it was such a joy to design my Om and Buddha’s Kiss© collections.

Sophia & Chloe Om Charm Necklace

This was my first nod to the great tradition of Yoga. I remember my first yoga class years ago. The instructor had us begin by sitting cross legged, with our eyes closed chanting “Om.”  New to all of this, I had one eye closed, and was looking around with the other thinking “Seriously? I don’t know about this.”  Now, as any yoga enthusiast will tell you, getting there early and really setting your intention in this way, or just calmly breathing for a bit, makes all the difference. The vibration in a room full of people chanting this sacred word is powerful. 

When showing these pieces, people often ask me what the word Om symbolizes.

Om: a mystical sound of Sanskrit origin, sacred and important in various Dharmic religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism …. In essence, Om is the signifier of the ultimate truth that all is one.

Sophia & Chloe Om Charm Bracelet

With so many different Oms out there, I really wanted to create my own unique version, so I decided to create my own Sanskrit font within a classic teardrop shape. The earrings are a reverse image of one another, creating a balanced and face flattering design.

Buddha's Kiss Earrings with Mermaid Quartz

Years after I designed my class Kiss© Collection, I wanted to create a new and fresh take on this symbol. The Henna motif for the word "kiss" is also a brace (above), and appropriately means "to belong together". These arabesques are imbued with such a rich meaning, I couldn't resist working with them again. The result was this design. After stretching and moving the "kisses" / braces around, a meditating Buddha's emerged in the negative space, hence our Buddha's Kiss©.

Friends Forever

Sophia & Chloe Friendship Bracelets

Whether offered by a timid child to a new friend, exchanged between sisters, or given to a BFF, these braided friendship bracelets have always struck me as the embodiment of wearing your heart out on your sleeve. Tiny, often sticky hands have tied these sweet tokens of affection on my wrist, first, by my daughters Sophia and Chloe, and more recently, by my niece Mia.

 It somehow just does not feel right to take something so heart-fully offered off of your wrist.  So… my husband Ken has attended many a “grown up” business meetings with one of the these peeking out from under his sleeve.  My daughters are usually adorned with stacks of these, especially after camp! And… no matter how formal the occasion, my sister-in-law Lisa is usually sporting one or two of these beauties.  Funny how a few pieces of braided thread so powerfully evoke the rich ties of love and friendship.

For all of the extraordinary women in my life, in celebration of the sisterhood of friendship, these are for you.

Thank you so much to everyone who has entered so far.  It is one thing to design a bauble in my studio, but it all becomes real for me when I see you actually wearing the designs.  So far we have gorgeous brides, beautiful family photos, friends celebrating, sweet babies, a world traveler who posted pictures of 18 different S&C designs, shot in 7 different countries, and just now, a very talented painter who posted a stunning self portrait of herself in one of our vintage designs.   I can't tell you what a treat this is for me.  I like to think of this as our Sophia & Chloe family album.

Our first ever Sophia & Chloe ***SPARKLE CONTEST*** is underway…. !

A Few Of My Favorite Things....

I have always thought that jewelry is so personal. Worn close to the skin, it really is a woman's own iconic statement. Even the way your jewelry looks, just casually on your dressing table, is such an intimate vignette... So the challenge for me is to create something really special that will strike a chord with someone on that level. When I design, I am always thinking of this, and also "Where will "She" wear this bauble!"

For over 20 years...I have worn these bangles every day....Some jewelry just becomes a part of you...Three are vintage Moroccan gold bangles, each one several generations old that were handed down to me by women in my family. My husband Ken added a fourth to my collection when we went to Marrakesh in 1988. This was the inspiration behind my Language of Bangles collection. Ken surprised me by having my Sophia & Chloe Stepping Stone Bangle cast in gold for me for Valentine's day. I am pretty sentimental about these....

I never really put away the other "regulars" shown here on my dresser. My every day go to pieces are turquoise Kiss gold hoops, my favorite Colette long lariat in blue green chalcedony, and the lapis Harmony bracelet I like to layer with my bangles. My stand by statement earrings are the Stepping Stone citrine gold hoops, the ivory Divine pearl hoops, and my olive cz and whisky quartz Jennie's Fancy chandelier earrings. For when I want to go all out I wear my Rapture shoulder duster chandeliers...I like to keep these out just because they remind me of celebrations.

With Just A Little Coaxing....

Hi Everyone….

Well, I am finally getting around to starting my blog.  I had intended to start months ago…and I got side tracked, got shy, and got writer’s block.  How much can you say about jewelry anyway??

Then my dear friend Beth Ann (also our graphic designer), said: “ just write about what moves you, inspires you, is fun to you, is important to you.”  So here it goes… I hope you find it relevant to you and that every once in a while, it brightens your day….
